Honey and Papaya Mask
Papaya contains extra enzymes that aren't found in other fruits; these enzymes can break down sun spots and areas of hyper-pigmentation. Combine 2 tbsp. honey and 1/2 cup ripe papaya. Mash with a fork until the mixture is blended. Apply a thin layer of the mixture to dry skin and let it soak in for 20 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a cotton washcloth.
Yogurt not only contains good-for-you bacteria; this healthy snack also contains enzymes that act together as a gentle bleach when applied to skin. A pinch of turmeric can brighten skin and reduce the appearance of oversized pores. Combine 1/2 cup plain yogurt with 1/2 tsp. turmeric in a small bowl. Stir until the ingredients are well-blended and apply the mixture to dry skin. Let the mask dry for 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cool water.
Citrus fruits are a natural source of glycolic acid, an ingredient used in professional anti-aging chemical peels. To make your own peel at home, combine 1/2 cup water, 1/4 cup orange juice and 1/4 cup lemon juice in a small saucepan. Stir in one packet unflavored gelatin and heat on medium heat, stirring constantly until the gelatin disappears. Transfer the mixture into a glass bowl and refrigerate for 25 minutes. Apply a thin layer of the mixture to dry skin and let it dry for 30 minutes. Peel the mask off gently, starting at the edges.
Oatmeal Skin Soother
Oats have a calming effect on skin, and incorporating them into homemade skin products can soothe redness, blemishes, rough patches and dark spots. Mix 1/4 cup colloidal (finely ground) oatmeal with 2 tbsp. olive oil. Apply the mixture to damp skin and massage with your fingers for a minute. Let the mask soak into skin for 15 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water.
