If you are sick of the laundry list of chemicals in your favorite shampoo brand, why not make your own? Curly hair has special needs – moisture, to be exact – which means that conditioning ingredients should be in your formula, not chemicals, fragrances, dyes and other non-essentials. Homemade natural shampoo can give you all the moisture you need sans the things you don’t.

Special Needs of Curly Hair

Curly hair has different needs than other hair types. For one, curly hair tends to be dry plus it often shows a need of care, according to hair care expert Schwarzkopf. Because of the tendency toward dry hair, a shampoo for curly hair should be ultra hydrating.

Benefits of Homemade Natural Shampoo

If you are up for a little time in the kitchen, there are many benefits to making your own shampoo. Making your own shampoo is less costly than purchasing shampoo from the store. Homemade shampoo is also less harmful than traditional shampoos. As a matter of fact, homemade natural shampoo is super safe since it is formulated without harsh detergents, parabens, sulfates, dyes and fragrances.

Shampoo Recipe

So now you know the special needs of your curly hair and the benefits of making your own homemade natural shampoo – are you ready to get in the kitchen and mix up a batch? To make it, mix 4 ounces of castile soap flakes and 1/4 cup of boiling water – be sure to completely dissolve the flakes and then allow the mixture to cool. Mix this cooled basic shampoo with 1/4 cup almond oil – avocado oil can be used as a stand-in. This easy-to-make moisturizing shampoo helps to drench your strands in moisture while getting them squeaky clean.

Dry Shampoo Recipe

Dry shampoo is a fabulous stand-in for a regular water and suds shampoo for curly hair. Dry shampoo allows you to extend the time in between shampooing your hair in the shower. Make one by mixing 1 tablespoon cornmeal, 1 tablespoon powdered orris root and 1 tablespoon finely ground almonds. Store it in a container with a lid. Use it by brushing hair, sprinkling the mixture onto roots and then brushing it out. Your hair will be left refreshed and oil and product buildup will be long gone.
