Homemade Hair Packs for Dry Hair

Honey is a natural humectant that attracts moisture to dry hair.

In the old days, homemade hair packs were pretty straightforward -- beer, lemon juice or mayonnaise (yuck!) -- and really didn't do anything to moisturize dry hair. Sure, they might add a little shine and softness, but if your parched tresses need a transformation, you'll need more help than those old standbys can give. So if you find yourself with a stocked fridge on a lazy weekend morning, pamper yourself with a rich, homemade hair pack that will bring new life to your locks.

Light Hair

1.

Add the honey and 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil to a small mixing bowl. Stir well to thoroughly combine the ingredients.

2.

Apply the mixture to your hair, beginning at the scalp and working it through to the ends. Make sure to thoroughly coat every strand of hair.

3.

Put on a shower cap or secure your hair in a plastic bag, and allow the hair pack to remain for at least 30 minutes. Rinse with warm water, then wash and condition as usual.

Dark Hair

1.

Place 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil and the molasses in a small mixing bowl. Stir well until thoroughly combined.

2.

Massage the mixture into your scalp, and gently work it through to the ends of your hair. Coat each strand of hair for the best results.

3.

Cover your hair with a plastic shower cap or plastic bag, and leave on for 20 to 30 minutes. Shampoo and condition as usual. You may have to wash your hair twice to remove every trace of the molasses.

Over-Processed Hair

1.

Peel a ripe avocado and remove the pit. Cut in half, and mash one half of the fruit in a small mixing bowl.

2.

Add 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil and the egg. Stir well to combine until you have a thick, spreadable consistency.

3.

Spread the mixture through your hair, from the scalp to the ends. Cover with a shower cap or plastic bag, and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with cool water and shampoo as usual.

Tips & Tricks

Honey is a humectant, which means it attracts and holds water molecules, making it ideal for hydrating dry hair. It also highlights blond hair and may even lighten it slightly with regular use. Molasses works on dry hair in much the same way as honey, by attracting and sealing in moisture, but it is also suitable for use on dark hair.

Avocado nourishes dry hair caused by using heated styling tools and too many chemicals, also known as over-processed hair. Rich in vitamin E, the fruit helps restore lost moisture.

To intensify any hair pack, wring out a towel soaked in hot water and wrap around your hair after covering it with plastic.

In addition to using homemade hair packs, the Drexel University College of Medicine recommends shampooing dry hair only once or twice a week, using conditioners and avoiding blow dryers and harsh styling products.
