If you have curly hair, you probably know how dry and brittle your hair tends to get. Curly haired girls are prone to breakage and dry hair, which means that it's harder for their hair to hold shine and they're often stuck in a never-ending battle with frizz. Almost every girl with curly hair has a medicine cabinet full of products that sometimes work and sometimes don't. It doesn't have to be that way. There are some homemade remedies that will make your curls soft, frizz free and totally healthy, without subjecting your locks to the harsh chemicals found in store-bought anti-frizz sprays, mousses and masks.
Soothing Oils Hair Repair Mask
This mask was developed and created by the girls behind the Beauty Department, the beauty blog of "The Hills" star and best-selling author Lauren Conrad and her stylist, as part of their Hair Boot Camp. You'll want to try this mask on a weekend where you don't plan on going out. To make it, mix 1/4 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup jojoba oil and 1/4 cup coconut oil in a bowl. At night, apply a nickel or quarter-sized amount to the ends of your hair and put your hair in a bun or braids. When you wake up, apply a larger amount to the middle and ends of your hair and your scalp if you have a dry scalp. Put it in a low bun for the rest of the day and shampoo it out at night.
Avocado Hair Mask
Avocado has moisturizing properties that will make your hair soft and touchable, which is why it's an excellent option for dry, damaged curly hair. To make this mask, mix half of a smashed, ripe avocado in a bowl with 2 teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil. Whip the ingredients with an electric mixture until they're creamy. Shampoo your hair then apply the mask, skipping the roots of your hair if your hair has a tendency to get flat (you don't want the mask to weigh it down). After application, clip up your hair and put it in a shower cap. Blow dry your hair on low for a minute to increase the effectiveness of the mask and sit for 15 to 30 minutes, depending on how dry and damaged your hair is. Rinse mask thoroughly then condition.
Banana and Egg Mask
Bananas contain potassium, which helps soften dry hair and moisturize flaky scalps, and egg yolks help repair brittle, dull and frizzy hair. If you have curly hair, you know a good conditioner is key to eliminating frizz, and this low-cost option will make your hair just as conditioned as a salon brand. To make this mask, mash up 1 banana and mix with one raw egg, 3 tablespoons of milk, 3 tablespoons of honey and 5 tablespoons of olive oil. Apply it evenly to your hair, cover with a shower cap, let sit for 15 to 30 minutes and then shampoo.
Mayo and Almond Hair Mask
To soften your curls and add some much-needed shine, mayonnaise is surprisingly effective. To make the mask just combine 3 to 4 tablespoons of mayo with a splash of almond oil. Almond oil is known to work as a defrizzing agent. Add a splash of coconut oil to the mixture as well, for some extra moisturizing properties and a nice tropical scent. Work the mixture into your hair and let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes. After the time is up, shampoo it out of your hair and you'll be surprised at how soft and shiny your hair is.
