The hippie hairstyle is all but forgotten. But just because you didn't grow up in the '70s doesn't mean you can't wear a pretty, romantic hairstyle associated with the era. With a few basic supplies and styling techniques, you'll look like you just stepped out of a time machine with your authentic hippie 'do.
1.
For the best results, shampoo your hair a day before styling. When you're ready to hippify your 'do, brush your hair through to get rid of any knots or tangles. Divide your hair into one top and bottom section. Leave the bottom section loose and clip the top section up out of the way.
2.
Heat your curling iron and take a 2-inch section of hair from the bottom section, clamping the ends in the curling iron clip. Turn the curling iron vertically, wrapping the hair around the barrel to get a pretty spiral curl. Hold it in place for a few seconds and then let the section of hair loose. Repeat this around the rest of the loose bottom hair and the top hair after that. Run your fingers through your hair or run over your hair gently with a natural bristle brush to break up the curls and get soft, loose waves.
3.
Pull out a small section of hair at the back of your head -- about 1/4-inch wide or a bit more if you want a slightly larger braid -- and braid down the length of the hair. You know, separate the hair into three even sections and pull the left section over the middle to the right, right section over the middle to the left, and so on. It's easy! Once you get to the ends of the hair, secure the braid with a hair elastic.
4.
Add another couple of braids about the same size, one on each side of your head. A few small braids amid loose waves gives you an authentic, gorgeous hippie hairstyle. Spritz your hair with hair spray to set your style and hold it all day. Just don't overdo it; you want a relaxed, loose style, not a sticky, hardened coif.
For a pretty finishing touch, add a flower hair clip to one side of your hair.
To avoid damage to your hair with a curling iron, twist damp hair or leave it in large Velcro rollers overnight to get the same soft waves.
