A half-twist hairstyle is similar to a half-up do except that it uses your top layers or bangs to create eye-catching twists. Celebrities like Lauren Conrad, Jennifer Garner and Nicole Richie can't get enough of them and are often spotted on the red carpet with glamorous half-twist styles. Whether you've got your own special event coming up or you're just trying to spice up your everyday hair routine, the half-twist is big on elegance and incredibly low-maintenance.
Lengthy Locks
If you've got tresses past your shoulders, you've got the length to try a romantic twist across the front of your hair like a headband. Look pretty and polished for daytime by adding soft curls, or show up at a concert with loose, Bohemian waves. If you don't have them naturally, try scrunching with a salt spray for a laid-back look.
Short Cut
Gals with short hair aren't excluded from the twist trend. Half-twists can give you a fierce look if you tease your hair like Rihanna often does, then tightly twist hair back on the sides of your head. Try it with curls or straight hair and don't be afraid to pair it with a chunky necklace or studs.
Twists with Extensions
To pull off a half-twist style with extensions you'll have to find just the right amount of hair to pull up without exposing your fabulous little secret. Don't try any thick twists that use too much of the hair you need for covering extension bonds. Instead, go for a thin twist on each side of your head. It's a little compromise for a whole lot of cute.
Touch Ups
One of the best things about half-twist hairstyles is that they're versatile. Go ahead, go from daytime to dinner and dancing; a fix only takes a minute. If you notice that your hair is slipping out of twists, undo it and smooth a tiny amount of pomade or extra-hold product onto the strands before trying again. On the other hand, if your hair could use a shampoo, sprinkle on some baby powder or dry shampoo before you twist. Bonus: These styles perfectly camouflage a little extra grease or frizz when you're having a bad hair day.
