If you've got thick, coarse hair and a square face, celebrate your good fortune. Your facial shape is ideal for some trendy hairstyles. The trick to avoiding being nicknamed "square jaw" is to go with a short hairstyle that eases up the sharp angles of your face and doesn't emphasize your strong jaw line.
Tapered Bob
Forget uber-angled or straight bobs, especially ones that hit right at your jaw line unless you're aiming to draw the eye of every beholder directly to your square-shaped chin. If you're wedded to bob, a tapered style that features lots of layers on your crown and soft, cheek-hugging layers around your face will elongate that jaw and soften up your whole look. Make sure the layers nearest your face taper and end either right above your jaw line or just below it.
Crop Cuts
The crop cut is a girl with thick, short hair's BFF. Go for one that lengthens your face with the one-two punch of long, side-swept wispy bangs and short layers up top that are cut to add some height with nothing more than gentle encouragement from some blow-drying and a touch of mousse. If you're dying to get some highlighting action going, consider gently lightening the layers framing your face. A softer hue will ease up the appearance of angularity.
Spiked Cut
Release your inner rocker girl with a high-off-the-head messily spiked cut, particularly if you're itching to put some attention-grabbing highlights in your hair. You're best off choosing a hairdo with longer sides that stay close to the side of your head and that are sharply razor cut so that the wispy tapered ends slightly flip out on the sides and distract an onlooker's eye from focusing right on your jaw. Ask your stylist to put in some straight, fringed bangs that are trimmed short on one side of your forehead and gradually lengthen as they move across your face.
Short Curls
Got some natural kink in that coarsely textured hair of yours? Don't fight it. Instead, make it work wonders as a method for softening up the look of your square face by taming your curls into a kittenishly feminine mass that frames your face. Part your hair on the side and make sure that when the hairstyle is complete and every curl is in place, the ends hit just below the line of your jaw. This hairstyle can take some time to pull off because you'll need to spend some quality time with the curling iron, smoothing serum and hair spray to prevent your sophisticated curls from degenerating into unattractive frizz.
