Hair Products to Use With Heat Rollers

Overview

When compared to other heated styling tools, hot rollers may seem like an outdated flash to the past. But ladies in the know realize that heated rollers are a fantastic way to get bouncy, playful curls in no time flat. Using them properly is important to avoid heat damage or hair that falls flat and frizzy, and that using the right products to protect and transform your mane into defined and dazzling curls.

Mousse

Reach for the hair mousse when setting your curls with heat rollers for hair that has beautiful body and bounce. To use, squeeze a puff into your hand and distribute it throughout your hair before you begin to roll your mane up in sections. If a fear of crunchy curls makes you a bit leery of using mousse with your hot rollers, there's no need for concern, unless you use too much. Starting out, use no more than the equivalent of a golf ball (if that seems like too much, start with less and use more next time around), which is generally enough for all hair lengths and thicknesses.

Setting Spray

Setting sprays, are an option if mousse and your locks just can't seem to work together in harmony. By using a setting spray you'll be giving your hair the power it needs to help set strong curls as opposed to limp and lazy ringlets that won't last. Apply your spray right after you've shampooed and conditioned your mane and before blowing it dry and setting it on the rollers.

Finishing Spray

A finishing spray will help keep your newly set curls and waves from falling flat and frizzy in record time. To keep your finished look looking fine for longer than an hour or two, carefully unwind your locks from the rollers (they should be cool when you take them down). Finger comb, shake or otherwise style your hair into the look you're going for and end with a spritz of your finishing spray to hold it prettily in place.

Thermal Protector

Hot rollers are just that -- hot. Just as with your curling irons and blow dryers, you'll want to protect your locks from heat damage by using some form of thermal protectant that acts as a barrier between your precious strands and the heat of the rollers. Spritz your hair with the protecting spray (don't get carried away and oversaturate it) before using the heated rollers to curl it up.
