If you're an African-American woman looking for good skin cleansers, you may find yourself in the beauty aisle, asking yourself questions aloud, such as, "Is this cleanser actually formulated for my skin?" Take the guesswork out by going for some tried-and-true cleansers. Whether you're looking for a gentle, exfoliating cleanser or one that keeps your skin moisturized without scrubbing, there's a skin cleanser out there that matches your skin care needs.

Soap-Free Cleanser

Whether or not you have sensitive skin, using soap can lead to skin that has that uncomfortable, too-dry, super-tight feeling -- a result of ingredients that are too tough on your delicate skin. Go for a soap-free option, instead. While these skin cleansers don't tend to suds up like soap, they get your skin nice and clean while leaving it super soft. Look for an all-over cleanser formulated for head-to-toe washing and you're good to go.

Oil-Free, Sulfate-Free

If part of your skin cleansing goal is to free your pores of daily buildup of toxins and dirt, opt for a cleanser that is powerful enough to get your skin clean without stripping it of its natural oils. Your best bet? A cleanser free of sulfates and artificial oils. Sulfates are known for removing oil while artificial oils such as mineral oil can clog pores. Ideal for skin that tends to break out or overproduce oil, an oil- and sulfate-free skin cleanser works for everyone.

Black Soap

While black soap works on any skin tone, it is usually derived from Africa and works wonders on African-American skin. If you're a fan of naturally moisturizing products, pick up a bottle of black soap body wash -- it's available at specialty retailers as well as your local drugstore. Black soap typically combines ashes from plant parts, such as leaves, with a natural oil like shea butter. This all-natural product offers healing properties helpful for problematic skin suffering from issues such as dryness.

Pomegranate Cleanser

If you're super concerned with protecting your skin from the elements -- think pollution -- while aiming for an even skin tone, opt for a skin cleanser that includes pomegranate as one of its active ingredients. Touted as a super antioxidant that fights free radicals, a bottle of pomegranate-based cleanser acts as a first step in keeping your skin safe from damage as well as pigment issues. Oh, and the pleasant aroma of this fruit just might lift your spirits, too.
