Maybe you've always been into creating edgier looks with your hair ... or ... maybe you're a little bit preppy but you saw a girl sporting a super-chic faux-hawk and were struck with sudden inspiration. Whatever your style, girly punk rock 'dos in the 2000s are easily within reach and no longer translate into bright blue mohawks. With a little direction, you can achieve a punk-inspired style whether you're looking for an extreme change or a subtle roughed-up vibe.
Short and Messy
When you think punk, the word likely immediately conjures up images of mohawks and gelled, spiky hair. Go ahead and opt for the modernized, feminine version of these classic punk styles with a short, messy 'do. Ask your hairdresser to crop your hair on the sides while leaving the center hair longer and choppy from front to back. Straight and wavy-haired girls, this is low-maintenance. Curly girls, give a quick blow-out for straighter tresses. When styling, add pomade or texturizing paste to your hands and add to dry hair. Tousle your hair, then pull it up and forward for spiky, faux-hawk-esque movement on top and in-your-eyes fringe.
Classic Cut, Dyed Ends
Going for a girlie, punk hairstyle doesn't necessarily mean cutting your hair into an outrageous, new shape. By adding a little intense color to your hair, you'll achieve the shock-factor you're looking for without feeling trapped into the look. With some inspiration from Drew Barrymore circa 2009, do something different. Ms. Barrymore showed up to a movie premiere with her classic blonde hair in a long, feminine bob, only ... her ends were dyed black. If this is too intense, ask your stylist for a wide streak of blue or vibrant purple for a similar effect.
Punked Out Pony
If you'd love a faux-hawk or even just a short hairstyle, but you wish you could test out the punk waters before taking the big plunge, play with a punky ponytail first. Tease the hair on top, smoothing it back with your fingertips. Slick a dab of gel onto the sides of your hair and pull it all back into a high ponytail at your crown so you have height on top with the sides of your hair tight against your head. Tease the ponytail for some mussed-up texture and consider adding a clip-in streak of bold color for an added kick. Very feminine punk ... and totally temporary.
Down and a Bit Dirty
Your most feminine hairstyles usually include leaving your hair down -- it just looks so soft and sexy when you let it do its own thing. Punk that look out and you retain the femme-factor with a roughed-up edge. You need straight to wavy hair for this one, so blow your hair out if necessary. Start by creating a very deep side part so the front of your hair sweeps to the side, covering one eye. Add a mattifying, texturizing spray to your hair and muss it up with your fingertips until it looks bed-head-ish and like it needs a good brushing. Throw on some black eyeliner and you're done.
