According to San Francisco Bay-area beauty expert and makeup artist Tracey Brown, Latina skin comes in many shades of brown and most often with a yellow undertone. Because of that, it's important to find foundations that address these two elements to ensure the best match.
NatureLuxe by CoverGirl is a drugstore bargain brand that is actually good for your skin. According to Brown, “it was created by Pat McGrath, a woman of color who recognized that the range and tone of the colors need to work. And they do work.” The sheer, yet buildable foundation is forgiving -- meaning you can go a shade darker or lighter than your ideal and not look like you are wearing a mask, which is ideal for changing seasons.
“My number one go-to foundation for women of color, including Latinas, is IMAN Cosmetics,” says Brown. The line offers several foundation types with matching powders and concealers. The company provides a chart that gives customers the ability to match the IMAN foundation to a brand they’ve already tried. Brown’s personal favorite is the oil-free Stick Foundation because it can be worn sheer or built up for better coverage -- it covers well enough to double as a concealer. Best of all, it's a drugstore product, so it won’t break the bank.
Make Up For Ever
“As a professional makeup artist, High Definition Foundation by Make Up For Ever is my go-to foundation for every skin tone and type, but particularly for anyone with any touch of melanin in their skin,” Brown explains. This foundation will erase a multitude of flaws and provide an almost airbrushed finish. There are several color options available for Latinas. Buy products online or at the company’s New York City boutique on East 12th Street.
Women who prefer a more natural look for their foundation will like Timewise Luminous Wear Foundation by Mary Kay, Brown says. The product gives excellent coverage and dries to a pretty finish that literally looks like velvet. It has anti-aging properties and works best for normal to dry skin. For those who need a bit of added moisture in their skin, this is a good pick. The bronze tones work extremely well for deep olive to dark tones, and the darker beige tones work well for fairer skin. The price tag does not break the bank, but you will have to find an independent beauty consultant to buy it.
High Definition Foundation by NYX is a budget brand that mimics its higher-priced competitors, according to Brown. She says it wears well, blends easily and has all the benefits of the prestige brands that offer HD foundations like Make Up For Ever and Smashbox, only without the sticker shock. It comes in a variety of colors and is readily available at drugstores.
Brown says High Definition Foundation by Smashbox has a line of colors that are blendable and wear extremely well. The brand’s medium range of shades fit well with olive tones and the darker colors won’t turn red. The foundation also includes an SPF 15 because all women need sun protection, no matter their color. The air-tight pump dispenses just the right amount of product so you won’t use too much. “I wear this foundation when I want to look very pulled together,” she declares.
