Lingerie is about more than function -- it's about fashion, too! While many of us love our undergarments for their smoothing and cinching properties, we should not forget that undergarments speak to the sensuality of being a woman. So, put down your functional pieces and invest in lingerie that hugs your curves and accentuates your best assets.
The Balconette Bra -- Va Va Va Voom
If you're hoping to accentuate your bust without the help of pads, air or other various water balloon type devices, go for the tried and true balconette bra. What differentiates the balconette bra from an ordinary bra? Well, a balconette bra is made with straps that are set off to the side, almost underneath the armpit. This position helps to lift the bust similar to the way a halter-top lifts and create cleavage. Also, a balconette bra has small cups than a traditional bra. According to BreastTalk, an online bra shop, "the balconette bra is very similar to the half cup bra but has just over half the coverage of the breasts and adds a sexier, more luxurious look. This style of bra is suitable for all women and can be worn under any clothing.
Negligee -- A Touch of Elegance
If you are looking for something sexy, but don't want to show everything you've got, go for a more conservative choice like a negligee. Negligees were very popular in the 1930s through the 1960s and gained iconic status in films such as "To Catch a Thief," starring Grace Kelly, and "Sunset Boulevard," starring Gloria Swanson. Negligees come in both long and short lengths and are usually made from satin, silk or other lightweight fabrics. According to Elegantwoman.org, a "negligee is a woman's light dressing gown, typically made of a flimsy, soft fabric. It originated in the mid-18th century from the French. Traditionally, the negligee is like a nightgown, worn in the evenings ... a few hours before heading to bed."
Garters and Leg Wear -- Naughty but Nice
If you are really looking for a dramatic look, opt for garter belts and thigh-high stockings. Famous icons like Betty Paige, for instance, helped make this type of leg wear deliciously notorious and a tad bit naughty. Stockings come in a variety of styles from garter-less varieties that use silicone to adhere to the thigh to plain stockings that must be worn with garter belts. If you plan to use the silicone enhanced thigh-high stockings, test them before the big reveal to make sure you don't have any silicone allergies. Remember, leg wear looks best with footwear, so always wear heels to compliment the look. For a bit of fun, purchase stockings with interesting details such as a seam detail down the back or fishnet weave.
Robes -- The Not-So-Obvious Choice
Although they may not seem like the sexiest choice, robes are the more comfortable and casual lingerie option. With robes, fabric tells the story. A terry cloth robe can be a luxurious but casual choice while a slinky satin robe can up the ante. Want to add a hint of drama? Try a slinky robe with luxurious trimmings like marabou fur or feathers around the collar.
