Ponytails are a great way to pull your hair back when you're washing your face or working out, but your pony doesn't have to be casual. You can dress it up for more-formal occasions. Learn how to use your curling iron to create a fab, formal ponytail.

Perfectly Curled Side Ponytail

Try a polished curl to make your ponytail much more dressy. The style looks adorable with a side ponytail, but it works just as well with a conventionally pulled-back pony. Start by applying a dollop of mousse to damp locks before blow drying your hair straight. Part your hair on the side, and brush it into a ponytail.

Curling Your Ponytail

Curl your hair in sections using a large-barrel curling iron. Split your hair into two to three sections; the idea is to create a few large curls that you can comb together to form one large ringlet. Curl sections holding your iron vertically. Then finger-comb your hair to form one coil, add a mist of hairspray, and you're all set.

Voluminous Ponytail

If you want to add a little volume to your formal ponytail, try using your iron and a few other tools to create extra body. Start by spritzing damp hair with a styling serum before blow drying it using a round brush.

Curling It Up

Wrap sections of hair around a large-barrel curling iron to create lots of big, loose curls. Finish off by flipping your head upside down and brushing hair up into a high ponytail, securing it with an elastic band that is the same color as your hair. Mist with a bit of hairspray for hold, and your ponytail is done.
