Hollywood's film noir era of the '40s and '50s not only gave us some fantastic movies, it also introduced the world to a very particular type of leading lady. The screen sirens and femme fatales of the era had a distinctive style that became a hallmark of noir films, and this classic look is still seen today both in the streets and on the fashion runways. If you want to channel your inner noir vixen, you'll need to know the makeup tricks that gave the leading ladies of film noir their distinctive looks.
Foundation
The noir sirens of the '40s and '50s didn't exactly look like they'd been basking in the sun, so lay off the bronzer and go for a light cream foundation instead. Follow this up with a layer of loose powder to take away shininess and give your skin a matte powdered finish. Go easy on blush, too. Try just a dusting of light shimmery blush on the apples of your cheeks to give your skin a hint of Hollywood sheen.
Eyes
Film noir eye makeup is dramatic yet simple, focusing mainly on defined brows and lush lashes. Use an eyebrow pencil to give shape and definition to your brows, then sweep just a hint of neutral eyeshadow over your lids. Try a light taupe or gray for just a hint of color. To define your eyes, use a black liquid liner to make a thin line across your upper lash line, then slightly flick the liner out at the corners of your eyes. Finally, layer on black mascara in two coats to make your lashes extra lush.
Lips
The signature film noir lip color is a deep and dramatic red, and is usually matte instead of glossy. Start by lining your lips with a lip liner pencil to define your cupid's bow and make your pucker pop. Next, use a lip brush to apply your lipstick. Brush on a layer, then blot your lipstick with a tissue and paint on another layer. Keep layering until the color is deep and rich. Layering on multiple applications of lipstick will not only give you a deeper, more dramatic look, it'll also make your lip color stay put longer.
Inspiration
If you want to rock a film noir look, you need to study the masters. Check out photos of classic femme fatales like Veronica Lake or Marlene Dietrich to get inspiration. Or better yet, settle down for a movie marathon to see some noir screen sirens in action. Try "The Big Sleep" with Lauren Bacall or "Double Indemnity" starring Barbara Stanwyck. You'll not only get a classic makeup lesson, you'll also enjoy a totally entertaining evening.
