Stereotypes run rampant about girls loving pink, frilly clothing and shiny, delicate jewelry. But let's face it -- plenty of women aren't into lace and bows. Just because you prefer a casual, sporty or menswear-inspired look doesn't mean you can't look as stylish as your girly-girl friends. Be a totally fashionable tomboy by choosing your wardrobe items carefully and steering clear of loose, baggy clothing.
Think About Fit
Being a tomboy shouldn’t mean borrowing clothes from your guy’s closet; they aren’t cut for a woman’s body, so you’ll wind up with boxy pieces that make you look sloppy. Look for menswear-inspired items that are tailored to show off your curves. Opt for boyfriend jeans, rather than sneaking off with your guy’s pants when he’s not looking. If you want to show your team spirit, don’t steal your guy’s jersey. Shop around for sports team apparel designed for women. The four major professional sports feature clothing lines for women that include T-shirts, caps, jackets, dresses, accessories and even jerseys, so you can look sporty and stylish at the same time.
Play with Color
Look for colorful versions of your favorite boy wear. For example, pair skinny jeans with a pair of bright red canvas high tops for a stylish take on classic tomboy territory. Wear a bright pink or green baseball cap, or put on a fedora in a dark purple or blue shade when you hit the town. Your guy may favor a neutral, earth-tone palette -- but you don't have to.
Mix in Girly Elements
Rock the tomboy look -- with a few feminine touches. If you’re wearing jeans, a white tee and tennis shoes for coffee with friends, add a pair of pearl earrings or a delicate silver bracelet to give your look a little girl power. When you go all out with a menswear-inspired vest and pants, wear a lacy or ruffled shirt underneath. Even applying soft, smudged eye shadow and pink gloss can give your favorite tomboy outfit some understated girly flair.
Don’t Forget Accessories
Choose all-girl accessories that complement your tomboy look. Carry a leather messenger-style bag in a white or cream shade to pull together any outfit. A pair of cool aviator sunglasses adds a stylish twist to a boyfriend sweater or plaid shirt. Don’t overlook jewelry; if you don’t like the look of overly girly pieces, opt for chunky cuff bracelets or studded necklaces for a rough, edgy look that works well with motorcycle boots and a leather jacket.
