The sun is shining and the birds are singing. You know what that means: sunglasses season! These versatile accessories not only look cool and classic, they actually protect your eyes from the sun's damaging rays. But with so many styles around, picking the best ones for you can be confusing and frustrating. Just remember to take your time and buy ones that you can wear for any occasion, and you'll be a sultry sunglass goddess this summer season.

Flatter Your Face Shape

If you have a wide face and choose oval-shaped sunglasses, you'll end up looking like Ernie from "Sesame Street." Avoid the cartoonish look and go with what suits your face shape. If your face is round, rock a pair of wide oval sunglasses for balance. Retro-style big sunglasses are your friends. If you have a long face, stick with oval glasses with horizontal lines to make your face look shorter. For narrow faces, avoid oversize glasses that take over your face, and stick to small, round lenses. Soften a heart-shaped face with oval sunglasses that have slightly rounded edges, or go with butterfly shapes.

Use Your Instincts

Don't buy a pair of sunglasses just because they're the height of fashion. Really look at yourself in the mirror and think about whether they suit your style, personality and coloring. If you don't feel comfortable in oversize sunglasses, don't buy them! There are so many different styles and shapes that you're bound to find one you like if you look hard enough.

Be Playful

Don't be afraid to go a little out-there with your choice of sunglasses. Seen on celebs like Drew Barrymore, Kelly Osborne and even Madonna, heart-shaped sunglasses are fun, flirty and feminine. If hearts aren't your bag, look for any funky-shaped retro-style glasses to add a huge statement to your outfit. But save the funk for the weekend -- heart-shaped sunglasses paired with a business suit is just plain weird.

Fly High

Channel your inner '80s Tom Cruise by donning a pair of aviators. Not just for pilots, these glasses look classy and retro and come in a variety of sizes, colors and styles. From cop-style mirrored aviators to cute, girly ones with purple lenses, this is one style that just won't quit. Dress them down with jeans and a plaid shirt, or wear them with your favorite summer dress and you'll ooze style all summer long.
