Easy Ways to Get Extreme Hair Tangles Out of a Circular Brush Without Damaging Hair

Don't let a round brush get the best of you if your tresses get tangled.

A circular brush is your best choice for smoothing and straightening your hair. Your hair curls around the rounded shape of the brush, which provides tension and hold while you're blow-drying or flat-ironing. It's a definite must-have for your cabinet of hairstyling tools -- especially if you have medium to long hair -- but if your hair happens to get tangled up in one, it can be a pain -- literally -- to get it out. Try a few detangling techniques that won't totally stress out your strands.

Spray

A good spraying of leave-in conditioner coats your hair and slicks it up. That's just what you need to sort of lubricate up your locks and help you get those tangles out. Don't worry about being overly generous with the stuff -- your hair is totally mangled around the brush so you need a lot of help getting it off, without destroying your poor hair. Try to spray it over the hair that's right against the brush, to help it slip off and come free.

Pick

Picking the hair off the brush is really tedious, but once you've got a tangle situation this serious, it's going to take a fair bit to get you out of it. To avoid damaging your hair, don't rip at it, just tug gently at it, moving along one side, all the way around the brush slowly. Your hair is really caught up in the brush, so it's going to take you a couple turns around, but eventually -- and with a lot of patience -- your hair will come free.

Comb

You might think the last thing you want is to bring another styling tool anywhere near your hair when you've already got this mess going on, but a fine-toothed comb can turn into a little magic wand when you're trying to get your hair out of a big knotted mess. Use the tip-end of the comb to loosen the hair from around the barrel of the brush, then use the teeth on the comb to slowly -- and gently -- rake the hair off the brush.

Tips

No matter which method you rely on to get your hair untangled from your brush -- or whether you use a combination of two or more -- make sure you treat your hair to some serious loving afterward. Apply a deep conditioning treatment to your tresses and let it soak in for about 20 minutes before rinsing out. Repeat this at least once every couple of weeks to ensure your hair stays healthy and happy.
