Brown hair color naturally has red tones in it. However, for those looking for a more neutral brown color from a hair dye, there is a trick of the trade that you can use.

1.

Choose a brown hair dye that is slightly darker than your current hue and has an underlying ash tone. Ash tones have colors that counteract orange-red tones in the hair, leaving you with a neutral brown versus a reddish or gold brown.

2.

Apply your hair color as instructed on the packaging.

3.

Use color-protecting hair products to keep your hair color from fading into a reddish-gold tone. Color protecting shampoos, conditioners, hair masks and styling products are very helpful in keeping hair color from fading.
