Whether you're a jet-setter or an occasional vacationer, don't get stuck with a flat iron that can't keep up with you. Voltage varies between countries, and that may translate into your styling tools not working with the electrical outlets at your destination. Those frizzy tresses may have looked fine at the beach, but there's no need for you to look shipwrecked when you've gone to all that effort to be the cutest tourist in the city. Invest in a dual-voltage flat iron before your next bon voyage.
Voltage Converter Problems
Most people head to home hardware stores for voltage converters for their electronics. While there is a chance that your flat iron works fine with the converter, there's a big risk associated: electricity passed from a converter can make your styling tool short-circuit or burn. Especially if you've got an expensive model, this is the last thing you need while on vacation. A dual-voltage flat iron works everywhere, guaranteeing no bad surprises.
Sizes
Dual-voltage flat irons are generally lightweight and compact for easy storing inside your suitcase or carry-on bag. Portable flat iron hot plates usually range in size from 1 inch to 2 inches, so consider your hair type before you buy. If you hair is very thick, choose a 2-inch flat iron for quicker styling; you don't want to waste precious vacation time on your hair. If your hair is thinner, or if you use your iron for curling, opt for a 1-inch hot plate.
Corioliss Pro
Toronto hair stylist Audrey Gatino recommends the Corioliss Pro flat iron for everyday use and as a travel essential. While she doesn't love the Corioliss hair dryer, the brand's flat iron made it into her favorites; she takes it on every trip. The iron heats up quickly to temperatures up to 410 degrees Fahrenheit. One note about this iron: don't be concerned that the packaging doesn't specify that it's dual voltage; all Corioliss Pro irons are.
Wet to Dry
Lots of brands make dual-voltage flat irons, but there are features to look for that make styling easier while you're away from home. Look for wet-to-dry flat irons: instead of wasting time blow-drying, you can go straight from showering to styling. Another issue to consider is the amount of electrical outlets you have at your disposal; you might end up in a hotel room that only has one or two outlets. Choose an iron with an extra-long cord and you'll be thankful you did.
