There was a time when you could only wear pants and skirts with a shirt. Today, you can wear leggings without getting the side eye. Because of this trend, you can skip dresses and slacks to look fancy at events. Top some leggings with a dressy shirt and heels and you will be right in style among those wearing wrap dresses and skirts.
The Leggings
If you're going for a dressy look, consider the color and material of the leggings. Invest in leggings that will last longer. Besides durability, leggings that cost just a little more don't look cheap because the material and stitching is better, which makes it easier to pull off a polished, dressy look. Besides buying smart, another way to make them last longer is to pick the right size. While leggings are stretchy, they should not be too tight or too loose. When it comes to picking the color of your leggings, black can be the most versatile to go with just about any top. Other options for a classic, dressy look include warmer colors such as cream, brown or nude. Stay away from bright colors and patterns. White can be an option when worn correctly. For example, try white leggings with a long navy blue top, a skinny red belt and red shoes.
Ruffled Tops
A ruffled top will make any bottom dressy. For a more tasteful look, go for a top that covers your butt. You can even add a belt that will not only add a fancy flare but will accentuate your waist. Pick tops that are one solid color, such as a bright red or yellow. You can skip patterns because the ruffles are enough. However, if you dare to wear a ruffled patterned shirt, go for vertical stripes to give a clean, long look.
Tunics
Tunic tops and short tunic dresses that are designed and embellished the right way will make a nice silhouette with some leggings and stilettos or fancy flats. Try black leggings with a plain tunic top covered with blazer. This also can look nice with sequin leggings and booties.
Button-Down Shirts
Whether you call it a button-down or button-up, you will look chic in this type of shirt with leggings. Try a long, white button-down with faux jean leggings or faux leather leggings and stilettos.
Short Dresses
Short dresses are usually worn as just that -- a dress with or without hosiery. However, with leggings, short dresses that you would usually wear only during the summer can become an anytime top with some sparkly heels. Short wrap dresses, ruffled and jersey dresses also are options over leggings and heels.
