When you're describing military style, trend isn't necessarily the right word. A trend is something that passes in and out of vogue. The military look can be done in such a classic, chic way that it becomes timeless. It can be dressed down for your casual days. And it can be dressed up too, with a little bit of know-how and the right pieces.

What's What

Most women have a vague idea what the military look entails. A certain type of jacket and that army green color come to mind. But, it's more than that. Think of all the colors that make up your typical camouflage gear. That famous muted green, taupe, black and khaki are included. But don't stop there; dress blues are deep navy blue and white. And old-school officer coats have fringed, gold epaulets. Gold buttons with eagles or other U.S. symbols on them count too. Cargo pants in either a skinny or slouchy style are tres military, as are workman's lace-up boots. There are so many military-inspired pieces out there it's a piece of cake to pick one and dress it up.

Dressed-up Lunch

If you've got a pair of khaki pants that aren't capris, something like a skinny or boyfriend version is better, then you've got the makings of an adorable daytime look that's a bit dressed up. Put on your khakis and roll them up to your ankles. Add an army green V-neck tee. Put your hair up in a casual, messy topknot. Now add a pair of gladiator heels to the look and a blazer with gold buttons. Don't forget your jewelry; it's the finishing touch. A long chain necklace, a pair of diamond studs and a chunky watch complete this military ensemble nicely.

Military Cocktail Hour

When you're heading out for drinks with your girls, you want your style to be quirky and fun rather than sexy or conservatively dressed up. A military piece can be just the thing to pull it off. Throw on those skinny cargo pants you're used to wearing on Sundays when you're out running errands. Then throw on a pair of killer heels -- or something with a platform should do it. Try traditional black, nude or a classic leopard print. Put on a sequined tank and your favorite dressy little jacket. Your girls will envy your mix master skills.

Club Style

If you really want to dress up and have military in mind, you should go for it. All you need is a military-inspired officer's jacket. You know the type: gold rope detail on the front and a mandarin collar. If you don't have one, look for it at consignment shops and vintage stores. Put it over your favorite little black or little white dress. A pair of tights and heels take care of your bottom half. Gold accessories to match the jacket and a dressy little clutch will make the look complete.
