Lingerie has come a long way from the faint-inducing whale bone corsets of yesteryear. Nowadays, lingerie drawers contain a plethora of garments to keep everything in place, set heart rates pulsing, give you that mid-week pick-me-up and even sleep in. The pieces you choose, be it frilly, tummy-sculpting or sizzling thong, say everything about the unique relationship lingerie shares between fashion, function and sex appeal.
Everyday Minimal Lingerie
Practical lingerie includes your favorite panties and beloved, but well-worn bra. It's made for everyday wear and your eyes only, having minimal style kudos. It's the tummy-sculpting bodysuit under that clingy dress, the cotton panties you lounge around in on the weekends and the 100 denier black tights you buy in multi-packs. Normally in shades of nude, black, white or gray, it does exactly what you need, support and protect at entry level prices.
Demure Vintage-inspired Lingerie
Made of sugar, spice and all things nice, girly lingerie is frothy and romantic. Often vintage-inspired, there are nods to classic Hollywood starlets and Marie Antoinette-style boudoirs, with decorative flourishes such as bows, frills, lace and diamante charms on silky bras and panties. Bras become balconette shaped, corsets and bustiers are introduced, while stockings become thinner (held up by a coquettish garter) and the color palette a frothy haze of vintage pastels and soft neutrals.
When the lights go down and the temperature rises, you'll probably head straight to your sexy lingerie. This is more adventurous and seductive, in rich alluring shades of black, red and jewel tones. Like girly lingerie, you'll find silks and lace to choose from -- just a little less fabric here and there, leather and even catsuits, if you're having a Catwoman moment. Often inspired by fetish clothing, there are references to corsetry and pin-up peekaboo details.
Slumber in style with a negligee, taking lingerie from the bedroom to between the sheets. It is head-turning camisoles, babydolls, French shorts and robes, with similar inspiration from girly and naughty lingerie. The fabrics are sensual and delicate, but comfortable, too -- think silk, lace and satin in any shade and pattern imaginable. Thanks to the 'loungerie' trend, the negligee also doubles up as outerwear. "InStyle" suggests wearing a silky camisole top with jeans and heels for a night out.
