Need long-lasting color for your lips? The biggest difference between lip stain and lipstick has to do with staying power. Lip stain wins out. It is a relatively recent invention with a base that consists of either water or gel. It's basically a dye for your lips, while lipstick is made mostly of wax with color added to it.
Advantages of Lip Stain
Lip stain is typically waterproof, and get this - it doesn't smear! That's right, no fooling. That means it doesn't gunk up your teeth or get on your clothes. Now that's something to cheer about, don't you think? When lip stain was first introduced, there were only a few ways you could apply it. Since then, manufacturers have dreamed up many other methods; you can get it as a brush-on, cream, gel pump or marker.
Lipstick
Women have used various types of lipstick since ancient times. Western society tended to associate lipstick and other cosmetics with promiscuity until the 20th century, believe it or not. And those neat twisty lipstick tubes you've come to know and love? They weren't invented until about 1915. The wax that allows lipstick to hold its shape is made of some mixture of beeswax, candelilla and carnauba wax.
Using Lip Stain
Lip stains come in many colors, and typically produce a matte look. This is nice for general use. You should exfoliate your lips first, and you might want to put on a lip balm to help the stain go on more easily. Then you shake up the stain before using and apply it quickly, since it dries fast. For a shiny look, you can put lip gloss over it. By the way, you can also use lip stain as a blush! Putting on a moisturizer first will help you blend it with a sponge.
Lipstick Formulas
Lipstick manufacturers may add various ingredients, such as vitamins, aloe vera and sunscreen to moisturize, soften and protect the lips. They also add fragrance. What's more, you can buy a variety of lipstick finishes, depending on the look you want. For daytime use, you might choose a matte formula. For more shine at night, you might opt for a frosted or shimmery lipstick.
