Difference Between Classic & Natural Jeans

Don't buy a pair of jeans in a smaller size in hopes of dieting to fit into them -- they'll only discourage you and get stashed at the back of your closet.

When it comes to jeans, just like size, one cut doesn't work for all. When jeans hug your body properly, they work miracles for your legs, hips and behind -- but they have the opposite effect when they're bulky or badly fitted. Feel confident in your denim and save yourself some time in the dressing room by knowing your best cut before you hit the shops. After all, even the cutest embellishments and trendiest designs can't make up for an unflattering fit!

Classic Jeans

Classic jeans were the first cut invented by Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss in 1873. Classic fit jeans are high at the waist, generally above the bellybutton, and continue down the leg without tightening or flaring. Older classic cuts were thought to cover up tummy bulge, but they were more frumpy than flattering -- they were eventually coined as "mom jeans." There are modern versions of the classic fit, however, with a lower waist and a slightly more tapered leg.

Natural Jeans

Classic fit jeans can have a higher or lower waist, but natural fit jeans always fall at the same place: your natural waist, which is the thinnest part of your torso. Natural fit varies within leg fits, though, and most brands offer them in boot cut or straight leg. The natural fit is cut for comfort, since the fastening of your jeans isn't holding in your hips. Instead, it sits at your waist and complements your curves.

Is Classic Your Fit?

If you have a narrow torso and you're looking for a casual pair of jeans, a classic fit can give you a retro look -- think Madonna in the '80s. Don't buy a light or bleached pair of jeans since they can look outdated. Instead, find the same cut in a darker wash, or even in a bold shade of red or royal blue. To modernize the look, pair your classic fit jeans with a structured blazer and edgy high heels.

Is Natural Your Fit?

If you're on the curvier side, get an hourglass shape with a natural fit. Since your jeans will be sitting at your natural waist, you won't get any dreaded side effects of low-cut jeans -- muffin top or red marks are never in style. You'll also feel comfortable and any problem areas will be concealed, even when you're sitting down. For a cut that really flatters your legs, choose a boot cut. Opt for a slim cut if you're wearing heels or a voluminous top.
