Devore isn't one type of chiffon; it's a treatment process that is done on multiple fibers and fabrics, including chiffon. The resulting piece of fabric is called devore and evokes a classic 1920s vibe. A devore velvet-chiffon kimono is oh, so chic. And a simple chiffon devore scarf will add glamour to the most casual of looks.

About Chiffon

Chiffon is a type of crepe fabric made out of any one of a number of fibers such as silk, cotton or polyester. It's woven in a certain way, with twisted yarns, that gives it a rough texture and a slightly transparent appearance. It's used mostly in the construction of evening-wear dresses, scarves and oh-la-la lingerie.

About Devore

Devore is a centuries-old technique from France to create a "burnout" look in fabric. The devorant is a special chemical that eats away the cellulose of the fabric, leaving behind the rest of the fibers. Any design can be created on fabric with this technique. There are devore pieces with flower patterns as well as abstract designs and feisty animal prints.

Why Velvet Chiffon Devore?

The most common type of fabric to treat with devorant is velvet with silk or chiffon backing. If you see a piece of clothing advertised as silk devore or chiffon devore, chances are there will be some velvety texture to it. The devorant eliminates the velvet pile where it's applied and leaves only the chiffon or silk behind for a beautiful, feminine finish. Other types of chiffon can also be given the devore treatment, but the effect isn't as obvious as it is with velvet chiffon.

Do It At Home

If you're into craft projects and devore chiffon, you're in luck. You can buy the product that creates the devore effect and use it at home. If you're a first-timer, go ahead and buy an inexpensive piece of fabric to try it out on. Follow directions on the packaging to the letter and you'll be on your way to creating chiffon devore pieces in your kitchen, craft room or wherever you do your thing.
