Whether you've had a disaster with dark dye or just want to go back to your previous color, lightening up your locks can be accomplished in a number of ways. Salons offer color correction services, but they can come with a steep price tag. If you've recently darkened your strands are unhappy with the result, a simple shampoo may be enough to get back to where you started, so that you can lighten up your hair on the cheap!

Start with the simplest method first. Suds up with a harsh shampoo -- not moisturizing -- try a chelating or volumizing type -- and rinse with the hottest water you can safely stand. If your dark dye is semi or demi permanent -- or you colored less than 72 hours ago -- several shampoos in hot water can strip most of the dye from your strands.

Try a hot oil treatment. The heat opens the cuticle and can help fade your color. Apply and leave on your hair as directed, then shampoo and rinse with hot water.

Use a color-removing product. These can be found in the hair color aisle at almost any pharmacy or beauty supply store. They are relatively effective at removing dark permanent dye. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully to lighten up your locks.

Contact your stylist for help if your hair is already damaged or the color was their mistake.
