We all want glamorous hair that shines, can be flipped around and, most importantly, is healthy. There are some pesky things, like dandruff, that holds us back from showing off our tresses. Get rid of those hats and hairbands that you've been using to hide you hair because of dandruff. There are ways of getting to the root of the problem and winning your hair battles.

What Is Dandruff?

Whether you have an oily or dry scalp, pesky little bits and pieces of dandruff can appear. Vince Smith of the Vince Smith Hair Experience in New York City says that dandruff is usually caused by the normal exfoliation of the dead skin cells on the scalp. If you don't shampoo enough, the skin cells will remain on your scalp. Dry dandruff is usually small flakes, and oily dandruff resembles clumps that are still attached to the scalp.

Budget-Friendly

No matter what our hair condition is, we usually don't want to go over our budget. Spending loads of money on hair products doesn't even guarantee great results. Hair stylist and esthetician Noelle Dianella recommends Neutrogena's T/Gel Daily Control Dandruff Shampoo and Conditioner. Dianella loves these Neutrogena products because they are inexpensive and designed for severe skin conditions.

Soothe the Scalp

When it comes to dandruff, soothing the scalp is necessary for keeping it dandruff-free. Mizu New York hairsalon owner Damian Santiago loves Bumble and Bumble's Tonic Shampoo and Tonic Lotion leave-in moisturizing spray. He says that the Bumble and Bumble products contain tea tree oil and peppermint oil extracts that soothes the scalp, balancing oil production and stimulates scalp circulation. The tea tree oil ingredient is a natural anti-fungal and anti-septic that cleanses the scalp, eliminating dandruff and even reducing itching. A $22 bottle of shampoo leaves you with a clean, dandruff-free scalp.

Analyze Your Roots

Fixing a problem is one thing, but getting down to the nitty gritty of it can really help you avoid the problem in the future. Avanti South owner Avi Elkayam says that it is very important to get a hair and scalp analysis. Elkayam recommends Rene Furterer's treatment line for shampoos and conditioners, specifically Astera. Astera uses echinacea and essential oils to kill dandruff-causing fungus. Rene Furterer also has a capilliscope, a great tool that gets a really good look at everything from your scalp to the condition of your hair. You can find out when certain lines will be bringing their analyzing tools to a salon near you. Usually the analysis is free.
