A scarf can be an instant outfit lift, amping up any outfit from ho-hum to noteworthy. When your outfit needs something special, grab a long scarf and get ready to rock. There are lots of cute ways to wear a long scarf -- wrapped smartly around your neck and tossed across the shoulder.

The Toss

When you’re sporting bare shoulders and need just a touch of coverage, a long scarf tossed casually over one shoulder is an easy and effortless accessory. This scarf tie is the standard of ties -- it doesn’t get any easier or more basic. Grab a long scarf and drape it around your neck with the ends coming down your front. Tug one end of the scarf a little so that one-third of the scarf is on one side and two-thirds of the scarf is on the other side. Grab the longer side and throw it over your shoulder so it cascades down your back. Arrange the part of the scarf that wraps around your neck to make sure it looks just right and voila!

The Loop

Shirts with a scoop or boat neck or even a blazer or jacket would be the ideal foundation for a quick and easy loop wrap. Set up the loop just like the toss. Grab the long side and wrap it all the way around your neck once. Reach your hand up through the loop around your neck, grab the end you just wrapped and pull it through. Arrange the loop to make it pretty and shift it so it sits on your shoulder. Super easy and oh-so chic -- totally slimming too with the vertical line hanging down your front.

The Key Tie

Any tee or turtleneck that needs a boost of color would look smashing under the key tie. A long, thin silk scarf is ideal for creating this wrap around your neck, and you’ll easily learn the tying technique to wrap the scarf expertly. This tie starts just like the toss and the loop. Wrap the longer end around your neck twice and bring the ends together right in front under the wrap. Tie the ends once loosely and arrange the knot so it looks neat. Now shift the knot so it sits at your shoulder with one tail from the knot going down your back and the other tail sitting smartly at your front.

The Shell Roll

Need a little coverage or warmth around your neck? The shell roll delivers, looking a little like a cowl around your neck. This tie works easily with a tee, crewneck sweater or tank top for casual occasions. Start this scarf wrap just like the others, wrapping the longer end around your neck twice. When you get the wrapping end around the second time, keep going and toss it over your shoulder. You can leave the end loose on your back or you can tuck it in at the back of your neck. Grab the end that’s sitting on your front and arrange it neatly so it hangs down from your shoulder for just a touch of trendy elegance.
