Short-waisted? That doesn't mean that you have to be short on style. Dressing to flatter your figure is all about finding outfits that bring balance to your silhouette. And because jeans are an everyday staple in your closet, it's a good idea to consider your body shape and get the fit just right.

Do You Have a Short Waist?

Are you sure you have a short waist? If you've never checked, get out your tape measure right now. First, measure the length from your armpit down to your waist. Keep that number in mind or write it down if you think you'll forget. Next, take the tape to the distance between your waist and the bottom of your bum. If the first measurement is the smaller of the two, you've got a short-waisted shape.

Your Perfect Jeans

If you fit the short-waisted profile, look for low-rise styles with longer hemlines -- as close to the ground as you can go without getting the dreaded drag-and-fray. Wear a pair of pumps or wedges with jeans that skim over the tops of your shoes and are about a half-inch from the ground. If you want to look pretty and polished, rock the skinny jeans or jeggings trend. These jeans look fabulous with stylish tunic-style tops that mask the short-waisted situation. If you're feeling more relaxed, a slouchy boyfriend fit is perfect for running Saturday afternoon errands.

Tops to Try

Anything that flows loosely over your natural waist is a good bet for up top, but that doesn't mean you're limited to loose-fitting shirts. Just make sure that your top ends by your hips if you're going for something more fitted. Lengthen your upper body by dressing to impress with lots of detail. That means that fun patterns, including florals and animal prints, are great options for you. V-neck cuts and draped necklines also do wonders to elongate your upper body, as do vertical stripes.

Other Styling Tips

If you want to wear a belt, reach for a skinny one that blends in with your overall look and doesn't draw too much attention -- remember, the key is to keep eyes away from your natural waistline. Once you get the perfect pair of jeans, dress 'em up or down to suit the occasion. To look rocker-chic, try a cropped jacket, left undone to add structure to your outfit without bringing too much attention to your waist. Or get set for a night on the town by pulling a metallic shrug over a simple white or black tank top.
