If you've been blessed with a head full of curly or wavy hair, you know that some days you feel more like you've been cursed. Sometimes your natural body needs a little boost in the bounce and definition departments. If your curls are falling just a bit flat or poofing out into a frizzy mess, try a dab of curling balm to create drool-worthy curly locks.

Why Use Curling Balm?

Curling balm is the ideal product for enhancing any natural curl or wave in your hair. Using the right curling balm for your hair type can give you soft strands and stronger curls that last throughout the day, all without that telltale crunch that many mousses and hair gels leave behind. Prepping your locks with a curling balm before heat styling also protects your vulnerable tresses from the potentially damaging heat of thermal styling tools. As a bonus, curling balms also help control the frizzies, even in the most humid climates.

How to Use a Curling Balm

After shampooing and conditioning your hair, gently blot out any excess water with a towel. Squeeze about a quarter-size dollop of your chosen curling balm into your palm and allow it to warm up for a few seconds. Apply the product to your hair, starting at your roots and working your way down to the ends of your strands. Gently comb the product through your hair to distribute it evenly. You can now allow your hair to air dry or use your hair dryer with the diffuser attached for faster drying. Either way, the curling balm will encourage the release of natural-looking curls or soft waves.

Curling Balm Brands

For coaxing your looser waves into tighter, bouncy ringlets, the savvy gals at "Teen Vogue" magazine have put their stamp of approval on the Kim Vo Twist and Fame Curling Balm. This curling balm adds a bit of oomph to your natural body to create luxurious, frizz-free curls. If you're more in the mood for playful, beachy waves, the ladies at "InStyle" magazine recommend the KMS California Curl Up Curling Balm. Simply apply the product, comb it through your hair and blow it dry with the diffuser attached. Spritz on a little soft hold hairspray and curl random strands of hair with a large-barreled curling iron.

Considerations

Keep in mind that curling balm products are specially formulated to enhance your natural waves or curls. These products are not designed to add shine to your locks. To make your hair look super lustrous, apply a shine-enhancing serum to your hair after you're finished styling it with the curling balm. If you plan on embracing your hair's natural body by using a curling balm on a regular basis, then make your life easier and your hair styling time shorter by getting a professional haircut that enhances the natural curl or wave in your hair.
