Although African-American hair is often very coarse, that does not mean that you have to use a curling iron to achieve curls that last all day. In fact, you can achieve bouncy, soft curls or ringlets without using any heat at all by using flexi rods. Flexi-rod rollers are a gift from the hair gods. You can literally curl your hair right before bed and wake up with big, sexy, voluminous curls that many only dream about.

Determine what type of curls you would like to achieve and select the size flexi-rod that can achieve what you are looking for. For example, if you want tight ringlets, grab about 20-to-25 1/2- to 1/3-inch flexi rod rollers. For larger curls, you’ll need about 10-to-15 1- to 2-inch flexi rod rollers.

Shampoo and condition your hair using your favorite products. Dry your hair completely and apply a generous amount of setting lotion or styling spray throughout your entire hair to add volume.

Section a 1- to 2-inch-wide portion of hair and clamp the remaining hair up and out of the way.

Comb the hair to remove any tangles. Place the middle of the flexi rod behind the hair.

Wrap the ends of the hair around the flexi rod until it is secure. Roll the flexi rod up toward the top of the hair section while turning the rod from a horizontal position to a vertical position.

Bend the ends of the rods backward, on top of the hair. The rod should look like the letter “C.”

Repeat the steps to curl the remainder of your hair. Spray a light holding spray over your entire head. Cover your head with a silk or satin scarf. Head to bed or allow your hair to set for five to six hours.

Remove the rods one by one starting at the back. Separate the curls using your fingers. Style your hair as you like.
