One of the reasons a girl might shy away from basic makeup products is because she doesn’t know how to put them on correctly. Eyeliner and lip liner often get ignored or passed over because of this. Even though you can’t draw a straight line on paper, this doesn’t mean you have to miss out on some of the best beauty boosters on the market.
The first trick to drawing a straight line with an eye pencil is to make sure the tip is a fine point. A blunt point can give you a thick, uneven line. Close the eye you’re going to paint. Use your non-dominant hand to pull the closed eyelid taut. Create short, dashed lines along your lash line. Go back and fill in the spaces you left unpainted with more short dashes. If you want to reinforce the look of your eyeliner, go over the perfect line you drew by applying the eyeliner over the same spot with one even stroke. Messed up? No big deal. Pass a moist cotton swab over the mistake and try again.
Liquid eyeliner is the secret to Angelina Jolie’s cat eyes, and this look can be yours. If you are a liquid eyeliner newbie, use an eye pencil to draw a faint line onto your eyelids. This line acts as your stencil. Go over that line with the liquid eyeliner. It’s okay to cheat when it comes to makeup. Resist the temptation to put the liquid eyeliner on in one stroke; instead, draw thin, dashed lines. Go back and connect the lines. If you want your liquid liner to look thicker, gradually paint the line wider. Go slow and steady with your liquid liner so you can get the perfect line on the first try.
Cream or gel eyeliners are among the latest, hottest items in the makeup aisle. This eye makeup comes in little pots, and you put it on with a brush. If you and liquid eyeliner don’t get along, try the cream variety instead because it is forgiving. If you’ve never used cream eyeliner, practice drawing lines on the back of your hand. Once you get a feel for using the brush, make a faint line on your eyelid — the stencil trick again. Go over the eye pencil with the cream eyeliner, using medium-long strokes. Draw a thin line first, and widen it a bit at a time. Voila!
Gwen Stefani always has the perfect vintage red, pinup girl lips thanks to her lip liner. Lip liner acts as a corral for your lipstick so it doesn’t bleed or feather onto the skin around your mouth. The first trick to drawing a straight line with lip liner is to resist the urge to draw a bigger set of lips onto your face. The second is to use a lip liner that matches the color of your own lips or is a little lighter than — or came in a set with — your lipstick. The J-Lo and Pamela Anderson days of dark lip liners paired with light lipsticks are over — and should have never existed. The third trick to drawing a straight line is to use a sharpened lip pencil. For the perfect pucker, slowly trace the cupid’s bow — the top ridges — of your upper lip. Then move on to the corners of your mouth. It helps to open your mouth a bit while you do this. Trace along the curve of your bottom lip. Using short strokes, connect the lines at the corners of your mouth to the other lines you drew. Keep the line along your lips thin.
