OK, so primer may be one of those beauty buzz words you’ve heard everybody talking about, but what’s the hype? Well for starters, if you want eye makeup that lasts for more than just the morning, a primer for your lids is essential. Eyelids are typically oily, but skin can appear dry and flaky when you pile on the wrong products. Keep a few simple steps in mind before you even think about reaching for your favorite shade of shadow.
Eye Primer
Eyelid primers are liquid products that are designed for you to apply before you put on your eye makeup. The primer will smooth out the skin on your lids to ensure your shadow and eyeliner glide on effortlessly. If you’re often left with flakey patches of shadow, a primer should put a stop to the problem. Think of it like applying a base coat to your nails and then your favorite nail varnish; the same principles apply. Ensure your lids are free of greasy moisturizers or old traces of makeup before you sweep on your eyelid primer.
Foundation
If you don’t have the time or cash to invest in a specially formulated product, don’t worry! If you don’t wear eye shadow enough to justify buying a pricey primer, you can prep your lids in other ways. Next time you apply your foundation, don’t just skim around your eyes. Apply a sweep of liquid foundation to your lids to give your eye makeup a base to cling to. Apply a liquid hydrating foundation to combat dryness and even out your lids. Go ahead and apply your shadow for a long-lasting look.
Double Up
Use different formulas in the same color for wearable eye makeup that lasts all day long. Prep your lids by applying a cream shade of shadow in your favorite hue. Seal in the color by applying a powder shadow over the top in a matching shade. The powder will cling to the cream for smooth and color-popping results. You can also try this trick with your eyeliner. Apply black kohl along your lash line and then trace the line with a black liquid liner. The kohl will act as a base for your liquid liner to adhere to, and the results will be super-striking.
Remember
Don’t fall into the trap of applying greasy lotions to your lids; they’ll break down your makeup and aggravate the situation. Just because you apply a primer, doesn’t mean you need to pile on the eye shadow. Pick a primer with peachy tones to give your eyelids added warmth, without the need for shadow.
