Unnatural hair colors are pretty out-there and it takes a special, confident kind of girl to pull them off -- but that girl could be you! This recent trend has been spotted on the likes of celebrities like Niki Manaj and Katy Perry to the much more conservative Lauren Conrad. All have been spotted with pink, red and purple hair. Whether it's an all-over color like Hayley Williams from the band Paramore or subdued streaks like Snookie's red extensions, colored locks are undeniably bold, but did you know they're also versatile? There are a number of hairstyles that help show off colored hair in a number of ways -- from brightly dyed and short to long and understated.
A Short Vintage-Inspired Bob With All Over Color
Katy Perry's short and classic haircut suits her soft pink locks for one major reason -- the contradiction. The classic style which is highly reminiscent of the 1940s emphasizes the unexpected pop of pink. This all over color is somewhat subdued because she chose a muted shade of pink and the classic haircut keeps her hair looking polished while still showing off her quirky personality. The only thing that's out there about her hair is the color and that's why it works -- it's the perfect blend of old Hollywood glamor and current LA chic.
Long, Dip Dyed Locks
If you're not sure you're ready for all over color but still want to make a statement, dip-dyed locks are a great option. This look, which was sported by Lauren Conrad of MTV's "The Hills" is perfect for those who want to stand out but not have their hair walk into room before them. To get glamorous, edgy dip-dyed locks all you have to do is choose three colors of semi-permanent dye. Lauren chose pink, purple and turquoise. If you already have long hair, part it in the middle and choose a few strands that you want to emphasize. Lauren chose the strands that fall against her back. Simply dye the hair from the bottom of the strand to about 3 inches up. This type of color will offer some funky accents to your already long and traditional haircut, plus it will fade in a few washes.
Medium Length And Choppy
Choppy, straight hair is an excellent way to show off a stellar dye job. Be forewarned that this look is ultra edgy. If you're the kind of girl who doesn't mind embracing the punk rock side of herself, then this look is the way to go. Ask your stylist for razored cut that will add texture to your hair. The texture will emphasize the different dimensions of your all-over color making it stand out more than before. Choose a cut that falls mid-length for a major impact that isn't too wild. If you have long locks, all over bright red, pink or purple hair could look like a wig, but Hayley's medium length hair looks natural, fresh and fun.
Hidden Highlights In Long Curls
For women who want an edgy look that doesn't overpower their haircut, clothes or features, adding colored pink, red or deep purple highlights is an excellent option. This look is sported by both J Woww and Snooki from MTV's "Jersey Shore." It merely adds a little bit of excitement an otherwise casual style. For a bolder look, try something like J Woww's chunky highlights, but if you prefer something more subdued, choose a couple of strands from around the nape of your neck and highlight them only. They'll peek out like a sexy surprise when you pull your hair into a pony or it falls over your shoulders, but otherwise they'll be your little secret.
