How to Condition After a Relaxer

Don't skimp on conditioner; it's the most important step after relaxing.

You're finished rocking the natural look. Now it's time to add a slick and chic look to your strands. Bring on the relaxer! Relaxing the hair gives you more ways to style your hair without heat -- that's the good news. The bad: your weakened hair can break if not kept constantly conditioned after the process. Back to the good: loving your hair back to life with conditioner is easy.

Rinse out your relaxer's neutralizing shampoo thoroughly.

Restore elasticity and strength to your hair by applying a protein conditioner to your locks. Choose a conditioner with hydrolyzed human hair keratin, which closely matches your hair's protein. You can also select a hydrolyzed keratin protein for deep conditioning. Silk protein is a strong natural fiber and will soften your hair. Coat your hair with the conditioner thoroughly from roots to ends.

Apply a plastic cap on your head. Sit under a hooded dryer for a minimum of 15 to 20 minutes to boost the conditioning properties. The conditioning time will vary with each manufacturer, so read the instructions.

Rinse your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water to remove the protein conditioner.

Follow your protein conditioner with a light, leave-in moisturizing conditioner or natural oil. De-tangle your hair while it is coated in conditioner with a wide-tooth comb.

Tips & Tricks

 

Condition your relaxed hair every time you wash it. Light or instant conditioners merely coat the exterior strands temporarily, so stick to more substantial protein conditioners.

Deep condition every two weeks for healthy locks.

Your hair and scalp should be in top condition before chemical relaxing.
