1.
Spritz your clean, damp hair with leave-in conditioner. Mist hair from root to tip since layers end at various lengths throughout your hair. If you comb hair when it's dry, your hair is more prone to frizz so get the tangles out when it's wet.
2.
Divide your hair in half. Smaller sections are easier to work with than large so take it easy on yourself.
3.
Hold the comb in one hand and place your other hand flat against your head. Having your hand on your head will help to absorb some of the pulling so it's less painful. This is especially good for extra-knotty hair.
4.
Select a 2-inch section of hair from the front.
5.
Start at the bottom of the section and gently stroke the comb through to remove tangles. Once the first length is smooth, move up slightly and comb through again. If you hit a knot, stop and use a quick, but gentle, stroke to remove the tangle.
6.
Continue moving up the length of the section. Since layers end at different lengths throughout your hair, you will encounter knots and tangles along the entire section. Be patient and comb your way through until you reach the scalp.
7.
Comb through the hair, small section by section, until your entire head is smooth and tangle-free.
