Blue isn't just for boys -- anyone can wear and enjoy blue. Blue is a calm, cool color, the color of the sea and the sky, stable and reassuring. You may feel blue and sing the blues, it's true; blue is not an energetic color and may need a little hit of a brighter hue to bring it into balance. Or maybe you like that serene and subdued feeling shades of blue can bring. Whatever your mood, certain colors complement blue especially well.
Orange
Color-theory-wise, orange and blue are true complements to each other. This means they look good together no matter what -- although you might want to try to match up different hues, such as a dark navy with salmon or a sky blue with a bronze or burnt orange.
Yellow
If orange seems a little too intense for your look, opt for yellow. Its bright warmth balances out blue's cool character. Try a dark blue skirt and a pale yellow blouse or layer that same blouse over a cerulean tank top. Another option: look for a dress with a saturated yellow-and-blue print.
Red
Red is another bright, warm color that plays well with blues of all shades. Try not to stay on the primary shades, though, or you might end up looking a bit too much like you're wearing a school uniform. A navy blue blazer and a brick-red or rust-colored skirt makes a strong statement for your office or upcoming job interview. Throw a red wrap around a royal blue dress for a stunning evening look.
Maroon
If you're looking for a color combination that's a little off the beaten path but still makes a strong visual impression, pair up your blue separates with some maroon. Maroon is cooler than red and thus a little more understated in a "speak softly and carry a big stick" sort of way. A navy suit with a maroon blouse is another powerful professional look.
Silver
If you're looking to add a little sparkle to your outfit, go with silver. Silver's icy shimmer paired with blue's cool calm equals a perfect match. This is a wintry look that may not be so suitable for a summer eve, but once the days start to get shorter and a chill fills the air, it can be the height of elegant glamour.
Don't Neglect Neutrals
Gray, white and black are the three classic fashion neutrals that go well with just about any color. So if all else fails, wear one of these color basics with your blue outfit and you can't go wrong. Gray and blue look particularly sophisticated together.
