What Color Tights Go With a Green Dress?

Should she stick with the black hose, or break out the nude fishnets?

A green dress is one of the most captivating ways to say "sexy." It's not over-the-top, like red, or overdone, like slinky black. It's subtle and tempting; it calls to mind emeralds and snakes and witchy women. No matter the shade of green, there's a perfect pair of tights out there for every dress.

With Your Formal Emerald-Green Dress...

For formal events and slinkier numbers, stay away from patterned tights and girly pastels. Solid black tights (if it's cold) or sheer black hose will keep the spotlight on your dress. Rub lotion into your cuticles before pulling on delicate hose, so that rough, dry skin won't catch and tear the fabric, and pair your tights with black heels to elongate your legs.

With Your Casual Khaki-Green Dress...

Play off the utilitarian vibe of your dress with a daring pair of black lace tights peeking out of high black boots, or contrast the masculine fabric with a pair of sweetly-patterned tights and high heels (think small flowers, not cutesy teddy bears). If you're feeling classic, match your dress with tights in a similarly army-themed neutral like brown or nude.

With Your Floaty Mint-Green Dress...

Warm weather? Make like Daisy Buchanan from "The Great Gatsby" in head-to-toe pale colors. Think sheer, delicate hose in nude, pale pink or white. Avoid solid pastels; they'll make you look like a little girl in her Easter dress. Chilly days ahead? Pair sheer black tights with a light, neutral shoe (light brown and pale green always look chic together).

With Everything Else...

As a rule of thumb, pair green dresses with neutral tights, since green is such an arresting color (and you don't want to overwhelm your audience). Keep the crazy patterns to smaller accessories like shoes. And avoid red tights; you're not a Christmas tree!
