In November of 2010, princess-to-be Kate Middleton announced her engagement to Prince William of England while wearing a stylish blue dress by Issa. Since then, royal blue has been seriously in, especially for formalwear. It's a striking color that's a little warmer and more exciting than other blue hues. Perhaps that's why metallic shades of shoe work well with this color dress. Go for precious metals if you dare, or stick to neutrals for a timeless look.

Basic Black

Your royal blue gown should be the center of attention, so choose footwear that complements without distracting. When in doubt, don a pair of black dress shoes. Black is neutral in hue and conservative in nature, so nobody will question your taste in footwear.

White shoes add a crisp, cool note to your outfit. White is another neutral shade that plays well with others-- you can add accessories in almost any color or style to this shoe and dress combination.

If you want to kick the glam up a notch, go for silver shoes instead of white. Cool, sophisticated and sparkly, the combination is hard to resist.

Maybe you want to bring a little more warmth to your outfit. A pair of gold shoes would be a possibility, but even better is copper or bronze. They're a little more sophisticated and understated than gold, but more daring than the true neutrals. This pairing is very fashion-forward; expect heads to turn all night.
