If you have clogged pores, you are probably terrified to smear any type of oil on your face. In fact, you've probably even been steering clear of oily foods and running like mad from most of your favorite lotions. So the idea of using coconut oil to clean your pores probably sounds downright crazy. However, with the proper application and the correct type of coconut oil, you can actually clean out clogged pores and eliminate associated breakouts and even acne. If you're wondering, will coconut oil clog pores? The answer is a qualified "no." You just have to make sure you are using it right and it will actually do the opposite!

Clogging 101: What Exactly Is In There?

Pores are literally tiny little holes in your skin. They are intended to release sweat and oils from the body to control body temperature and maintain the health of your skin. However, since they are holes, things can get in the same way things get out. When your pores get clogged, they may be filled with cosmetics, dead skin cells or just plain dirt. They can even clog due to buildup from oils and sweat. All of these things can lead to acne. Coconut oil, when used correctly, can actually break down this buildup and unclog pores without filling them back up with something else.

Why Coconut Oil Works

Coconut oil is an anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory agent. This means that it not only kills off microbes in the pores that can cause infections and outbreaks, but it also reduces existing infections and inflammations in your pores. When your pores are not inflamed, they are less likely to become clogged. Add to this the fact that coconut oil breaks down sebum, the oil released through your pores that often "congeals" in them and clogs them, and you have the perfect anti-clogging agent in coconut oil.

The Right Stuff

It would be pretty terrible if you finally talked yourself into using coconut oil on your face and then it clogged your pores after all, wouldn't it? Of course it would! That is why you must make sure that you are using virgin coconut oil on your skin. Refined coconut oils have had their most beneficial attributes processed right out of them, and they will absolutely fill up your pores like a stopper in a sink. Read the label carefully. If you see the word "hydrogenated" anywhere, put that bottle down and walk away slowly.

Safety Tips

Coconut oil will not clog pores, assuming you are using it correctly, but some people do experience allergic reactions to this skin treatment. To make sure that you are not one of them, smear a small amount on the inside of your wrist or elbow, then monitor the area for 20 minutes. If you do not see any redness, swelling or irritation in the area, you can use coconut oil as an unclogging-pore treatment.
