Do your rock your favorite flat bill hat so frequently that it has a bit of wear and tear? Washing a flat billed hat is simple; just be careful you don't change the shape or shrink your coveted cap. The trouble-free solution is to hand wash it.
1.
Look the hat over for any washing instructions. Manufacturers' tags often note the best care for the hat's fabric. Follow any instructions, if given.
2.
Fill the sink with water until it covers the hat. Ensure that the water is warm, but not too hot for comfort. For a wool cap, use cool water. Rinse the hat until water has soaked it through.
3.
Apply liquid detergent to the water. Only a small amount will be needed, since you're just washing one thing. Use your hands or a small brush to scrub the hat, cleaning any problem areas.
4.
Let the hat soak in the soapy water for 10 minutes -- no longer. Excessive soaking can wear down the hat's materials.
5.
Drain the sink, and thoroughly rinse the hat under warm water. Ensure that all liquid detergent has been washed from the hat. Hang the hat to dry. Stuff the hat with an old rag or T-shirt to allow it to dry in its original shape.
