The classic trench coat is a staple item that should be in every woman's closet. It is not only versatile, but it also has the hard-to-find ability to make a woman feel like a million bucks even on a rainy day. A hint of mystery, a bit of sex appeal, and a lot of sophistication are things that come to mind when thinking of the classic trench coat.

The History of the Classic Trench Coat

The classic trench coat was born during World War I out of a need for something lighter than its heavier cousin, the greatcoat in, yes, the trenches. The trench coat served to protect the body from the elements and chilly temperatures. Both Burberry ad Aquascutum claim to have designed the original trench coat, but Burberry is indeed the creator of gabardine, the weatherproof fabric that trench coats are commonly made of.

Elements of the Classic Trench Coat

The classic trench coat generally falls at the knee and is made of weatherproof material. Some trench coats may be double-breasted with buttons adorning each panel. A wraparound belt that ties in front is a must-have feature for ever woman's classic trench. The belt emphasizes the waist and curves of a woman -- reminding us that the classic trench coat is not frumpy, oh no. Foxy is the word that comes to mind here. Silk lining makes for a luxurious feel.

Styling the Classic Trench Coat

From a cool spring day to a rainy, cold autumn day, the trench coat may make an appearance from your closet because of its versatile nature. Pair it with a pencil skirt ensemble to the office or skinny jeans, and either way, the classic trench coat will keep you looking chic and sophisticated with a hint of sexy. Wear sunglasses during the daytime with your trenchcoat to amp up the sexy factor.

Selecting the Perfect Trench Coat

While high-end designers such as Michael Kors, Burberry and Chanel design their versions of the classic trench coats, these pieces can come with a hefty price tag. For the fashionista on a budget, there's no need to fret. You don't have to sacrifice luxury and high-quality craftsmanship by paying less. For example, Banana Republic's Fall 2010 trench coat featured double-breasted panels and silk lining and retailed for $198, and the DKNY belted trench could be found for $69.99 at select retailers at the time of publication, in May 2011.
