Whether it’s a lotion or a toner, clarifying skin products have a common goal in your beauty routine: Clarifying products attempt to create a smooth, flawless canvas with a glowing finish. They work by clearing away dirt, grime and dry skin cells that clog your pretty little pores. When deciding between a lotion and a toner, consider your skin type and the ultimate beauty benefit you wish to achieve.

Clarifying Toner

One of the main differences between clarifying lotion and clarifying toner is the texture of the products. Toner is a liquid; its texture is similar to water. To apply a clarifying toner, saturate a cotton ball or cotton pad with the product and swipe across the skin. Let the toner sink into the skin for 30 to 60 seconds before proceeding through your beauty routine.

Clarifying Lotion

Clarifying lotion is thick and creamy. To apply clarifying lotion, squeeze a small amount into your palm and rub gently between your hands. The friction warms the lotion just slightly, which helps it saturate into your skin. Use your fingertips to gently massage the lotion into your skin with light circular motions. Wait at least five to 10 minutes before applying your makeup to allow the lotion plenty of time to absorb.

Advantages

Clarifying toner is meant to restore the natural pH balance of the skin. During the washing process, certain soaps and cleansers have alkaline properties that interact with the acidic properties of the skin. As the soap massages into your skin, the pH balance is disturbed. Clarifying toners also help eliminate excess oil, which can be particularly beneficial for sweeties with slick and shiny skin. Clarifying lotion’s main function is to moisturize the skin.

Disadvantages

Some forms of clarifying toner are made with alcohol, which can be extremely drying to your delicate features. If you have sensitive skin, clarifying toner might be too irritating for your face. On the other hand, clarifying lotions can be a bit too moisturizing for oily skin. Unlike toner, moisturizer has a heavy texture that sits on the skin. If you’re already battling the T-zone shine, applying a clarifying lotion might only perpetuate your problem.
