Throw that boring, brown eye makeup in the trash. It's all about jewel tones, like iridescent blue, green, purple and pink, to brighten up your eyes. But before you rush off to the store and buy every bold eyeshadow you can find, find the right jewel-toned shades for your mahogany skin tone. When your bold makeup complements your skin, it will draw attention to your gorgeous skin instead of fighting against it.

1.

Determine if your skin is warm or cool before you go out to the makeup store. Hold an orange scarf next to your face, then hold a pink scarf next to your face. If the orange makes your skin look radiant, your skin is warm. If the pink scarf makes your skin look better, it's cool. Remember this knowledge when picking out jewel tones.

2.

Pack your purse with a supply of makeup remover wipes, a hand mirror, mascara and eyeshadow primer, if you have it. Put on your typical primer, foundation, powder and blush before you head out to the store so you can get a good idea of the way jewel-toned makeup will match with the rest of your look.

3.

Slick a layer of eyeshadow primer over your eyes before trying out any eyeshadow, recommends New York-based makeup artist Dina Gardner. Eyeshadow primer makes the eyelid look brighter and prevents the eye makeup from creasing.

4.

Line your eyes with a dark eyeliner pencil, smudging it to create a bold outline around the entire eye. This outline helps the jewel-toned eye color on your lid pop.

5.

Choose jewel-toned eyeshadow based on your skin tone. If you have a warm skin tone, go for orange, ruby, amber and emerald shades. If you have a cool skin tone, opt for pink, sapphire, turquoise and emerald shades.

6.

Apply mascara and lipstick to finish the look off -- before you buy your jewel-toned makeup. If you can't find a lipstick to match, you're not likely to actually wear the eyeshadow you chose. Pick lipstick in dark reds or browns if you have a warm skin tone, and lighter pinks if you have a cool skin tone. Stay away from bold, bright lipstick because it will draw attention away from your beautiful jewel-toned eyes.
