Makeup gets moody with the deep lip color trend, an unabashedly opulent beauty trend that’s guaranteed to keep your kisser in the spotlight. Let your dark side have some fun with this intense look. The only trick to this trend is rocking the right shade. Nothing takes deep lipstick from sexy to scary like a color that clashes with your complexion. If you have cappuccino skin — a light-brown complexion with warm-yellow undertones — a ravishing range of dark lip colors look lovely on you. Choose opaque textures and warm-purple or -brown tones.

1.

Opt for deep lip colors with rich, warm berry, maroon or chocolate tones. These hues look hottest on a cappuccino complexion.

2.

Vamp it up in deep, dusky shades of red. Think garnet, black raisin or deep cranberry. The burgundy tones in these shades pack enough drama to pop against your rich complexion, and won’t clash with the yellow in your skin the way a blue-toned red might.

3.

Go gothic the runway-ready way with purple-red shades such as plum, deep wine or dark berry. These darkly sultry hues look edgy and elegant at the same time. Don’t be afraid — purplish lipstick may look intimidating in the tube, but you’ve got the complexion to pull it off.

4.

Do the decadently dark look with good-enough-to-eat shades of chocolate, burnt caramel or black coffee. Look for shades with rich bronzy tones to bring out the natural warmth in your skin.

5.

Choose a dark lipstick with a rich, fully opaque texture. Sheer or glossy formulas just don’t hold up to darker skin tones. You have plenty of natural pigment in your pout, so a lightweight lipstick isn’t enough to cover your pucker’s natural hue.

Tips & Tricks

Sorry, you can’t just swipe on deep lipstick straight from the tube. With a color this bold, every tiny little mistake shows up. Apply dark lipstick with a makeup brush for the greatest precision and control. If you don’t have a lip brush handy, carefully dot the color on with your digits.

Layer dark lips over concealer and lip liner for a professionally perfect finish. Apply one coat, blot with a tissue and then dust with powder. Apply a second coat and then add just a dab of gloss.

Unless you’re stomping the runway, you should never pair deep lip color with dark, smoky lids. Keep the rest of your makeup clean and understated for a classy look.
