It is a good thing the world of fashion isn't a J.R.R. Tolkien story with one dress to rule us all. Women come in all shapes and sizes and so do dresses. The oval body shape is typified by roundness to each segment of the body from shoulders to hips. When choosing a black dress for your oval-shaped body, you want to find a dress that creates shape and definition while flattering your best features.
1.
Work the silhouette. Women with the oval body shape sometimes try to hide behind baggy, loose clothing, but that just adds bulk. Pick a silhouette that has structure. Wrap dresses offer great waist definition and the cut moves beautifully over the hips. A tailored sheath dress or A-line dress flatters an oval body shape by fitting curves comfortably. Dresses with an Empire waist emphasize the bust and draw attention from other areas.
2.
Avoid light, stretchy fabrics that cling. A stretchy fabric is great, but make sure it has enough weight to create a smooth line. When going for a tailored look, a stiff fabric will help control those curves.
3.
Pick a neckline that works for your body type. A V-neck draws attention down and helps to streamline your look. A black dress with a funnel or tie neck draws attention to your face. Likewise, pick a black dress with any type of embellishment around the neck and shoulders to create a strong line.
4.
Go for a hem length that flatters. Skirts that fall above the knees and higher show off the line of the calves and give you a longer, leaner appearance. If everything about a dress is perfect but the hem, have a tailor take it up.
