If you're a woman who considers a trench coat an appropriate wrap for chilly spring weather or a fashionable raincoat, you're on the right track. But you may not think that trench coats also work as stylish winter coats. Granted, you won't want to wear your spring trench in the winter. It's all about lining and fabrication. For not-too-bone-chilling winter days, opt for warm fabrics such as wool, cashmere or blends. For near-tundra temps, pull on a coat constructed with winter-proof lining for inclement weather.
Detailing
If you have an eclectic style and are searching for a trench coat with a bit of a twist, it's all in the detailing. The classic double-breasted, three-quarter length will remain, but keep your eyes open for contrast piping, embroidery or pretty colors. Let's say you've hit the jackpot with a dark purple trench with cream piping and cream-hued covered buttons. Wear this trench over a black crewneck sweater, dark blue denim trousers and gray high-heel boots.
Menswear Inspired
Sure, trenches inherently offer a menswear-inspired vibe, but by looking for a straighter shape that doesn't include a cinched, belted waist as well as a broad lapel, you can stretch that menswear look just a bit further. Go for a toffee brown coat with tortoise shell-inspired buttons over a heather blue oversized crewneck sweater. Pull on a pair of distressed blue straight-leg jeans. Step into a pair of sand-hued, chunky-heeled chukka boots and you're done.
Classic Chic
When you're looking to incorporate a trench coat into your otherwise very classic winter wardrobe, your quest is quite a simple one. Start with a classic black trench coat with matching buttons, a self belt and an A-line silhoutte. Wear your coat over a white button-front shirt tucked into a gray tweed mini-skirt. Slide on black opaque tights and step into a pair of black riding boots. So polished pretty.
Military Trend
When you're aiming for a fashion-forward winter coat that doesn't stray too far from a classic look, opt for military styling. It's super on-trend and goes with almost everything. Search for a navy blue, double-breasted, trench-style coat with brass-hued buttons. Oh, and if you can find a coat with epaulets, even better. Pull this coat on over a dark gray V-neck sweater and a chiffon maxi-skirt with an allover burgundy-and-gray abstract floral print. Slide on black opaque tights for warmth and step into nude suede booties with cone heels. Tres chic.
