Can you wear stockings with a peep-toe pump? Your immediate answer to that image may be a resounding no, but the truth is, as long as you follow a few simple rules you can pull off this look while coming off as chic and fashion-forward, rather than someone who didn't take the time to look in the mirror before she stepped out the door. The key is to make it look intentional. So rest assured, you don't have to relegate those peep toes to the back of your closet come winter!
Absolutely No Seams
Do not wear tights with visible toe seams with your peep toes; it tends to look messy and careless. Or if you can adjust the seams so they remain hidden on the underside of your feet, that works too. When you choose stockings to wear with peep toes, be sure that there is contrast. For instance, wear black opaque tights with a bright magenta patent peep-toe pump, or navy tights with caramel-colored suede shoes. The contrast makes it look intentional. Plus, it's a lot of fun to see something so different.
Steer Clear of the Sheer
The cardinal rule is to wear opaque tights with open-toe shoes. It can be distracting when there's a lot of skin showing, and the blocks of color give the look a more balanced feel. But definitely feel free to play with patterns -- lace, argyle, polka dot, etc. Have fun with it!
Never Nude Stockings
Wearing nude stockings with your peep toes makes it seem like you wore hose to the office, changed shoes without realizing you were making a major fashion faux pas, and then clunked over to whatever fabulous party where everyone knew the "no nude stocking" rule. Don't be that girl. This no-leniency rule also applies to white stockings, which make you look like an off duty nurse. Or depending on what you're wearing, an overgrown 4-year-old.
Be Fearless and Fierce
Don't be nervous about wearing stockings with your peep toes. Fashion-conscious celebrities like Rachel Bilson, Mischa Barton, Kate Moss and Heidi Klum have been photographed rocking the tights and peep-toe look! So regardless of who around you is or isn't doing the same, know that you're in good company if you do decide to give this look a try. If you don't know what colors to go with, you can't go wrong with basic charcoal tights with a bright-colored platform sandal (think mustard yellow, jewel-green or royal purple).
