In the fashion world, there's overlap between spring and summer clothing, so spring's lightweight, airy styles are as legit in August as they are in May. But in fact, you can wear your spring clothes throughout the year. With a few layering pieces, you can make your wardrobe stretch to year-round.
Fall
Put on your best lightweight spring dress with a pair of tights and you've instantly got a fall outfit. You can even pair your chunky sandals with tights, or stick to pumps. For day, wear with a chic pair of black ballet flats. Don't worry about the contrast between light colors and fabrics and black tights. Pairing opposites is a chic and bold fashion move.
Winter
Boots serve more than one function when you're pairing them with spring gear. They look cool and sexy -- especially the knee-high stacked version -- and they keep your legs warm, even after the flakes have hit the pavement. Pair ankle high booties with tights and your colorful spring skirts. Put knee-high boots with a chiffon pleated maxiskirt, and channel a sweet '70s vibe.
Inclement Weather
Cardigans and sweaters turn your sweet dresses into even sweeter skirts. They're perfect to throw on when the spring rain starts to pelt down from the sky. Don't underestimate having at least one fitted, chunky knit sweater on hand to layer with your spring wardrobe. They fit over lightweight T's and button-ups quite well. A basic black or taupe cardigan is a good choice, too. Get a long version to belt over dresses, leggings and pants. Keep your umbrella handy, of course.
Another Spring Tip
Jackets are the finishing touch on a transitional outfit. Here's a tip: To ensure you're always looking cool and fashion savvy with your day wear, choose a jacket that contrasts with the mood of your outfit. For example: Going grunge? Schoolboy blazer or sequins. Going girly and sweet? Military or leather jacket. Wear jackets in spring and in fall, and layer them under coats or fur vests during winter. Throw one over your desk chair during summer to combat the strong office AC. And grab it on your way to the theater, where there's always a chill.
