You can wear skinny jeans and a sweater dress, but not if you want to look like you know your stuff when it comes to fashion. Not to sound harsh, but dresses and jeans were never a good look, and the trend came and went fast. The good news is there are other ways to wear your sweater dress that are cuter and more comfortable than jeans.
Tights
You should definitely wear your sweater dress with tights. Plain, black, opaque tights are obviously a good choice. But, if you're looking at a plain black sweater dress (which you should own), patterned tights can be an inspired choice -- not to mention subtly sexy. Gwyneth Paltrow recommends going bold with a pair of hot pink tights under your sweater dress. Whichever way you look at it, tights are a good idea.
Leggings
Leggings are the closest you should get to pants and your sweater dress. They're OK, but pushing it a little bit. Stick to a mini sweater dress that's about mid-thigh. If it's down to your knees or below, go with tights. Stay away from cropped ankle leggings -- full-length leggings will make you look longer and leaner. Wear a pair of heeled ankle boots to add height or a pair of ballet flats when you're out running errands in this cute, comfy look.
Bare
You don't have to wear anything on your legs with your sweater dress. Not at all. Bare legs work in three out of four seasons. So if you're less than confident about your stems, it's worth your while to hit the gym and then buy a four-inch heel to show them off and make them look their best. Nude patent shoes are flattering on everyone and go with any color dress you might have.
The Exception
There is one way that you can put a sweater dress with skinny jeans. If you've accidentally shrunk it in the wash, and it barely covers your behind, go ahead and put it with skinnies. But you're no longer wearing a sweater dress, it's a sweater or a sweater tunic.
